Hello everyone,
I recently had to buy doxycycline for my dog. She has been diagnosed with Lyme disease, and my vet prescribed her some medication. However, I'm a bit confused about where to get it from and how exactly to administer it. Can anyone provide any advice or share their experiences?
Thanks in advance!

Hi PetLover123,
I can definitely help you with that! First off, it's essential to get doxycycline from a reputable pharmacy. You should never buy it over the internet or from unverified sources because the quality may not be guaranteed. Ask your vet for recommendations on where to purchase it locally.
As for administration, make sure to follow the dosing instructions provided by your veterinarian meticulously. Typically, doxycycline comes in capsule form and can usually be given with a small amount of food to avoid stomach upset. It's important to give the full course as prescribed even if you see improvement before finishing all doses.

Thank you, VetFanatic! That’s very helpful. My vet did suggest a local pharmacy for me to buy the medication from, but I’m still unsure about the dosing.
My dog is supposed to get doxycycline twice daily. Should I give it with both meals or at specific times regardless of her eating schedule? Also, she's quite small (about 10 lbs). Is there any special precaution for smaller dogs?

Hi PetLover123,
For dosing twice daily, it's generally better to administer the medication with meals. This helps minimize stomach upset and ensures she consumes her food regularly. You could give one dose in the morning with breakfast and another around dinner time.
Regarding smaller dogs like yours, doxycycline can be a bit rough on their stomachs. So, following your vet's instructions carefully is crucial. If the medication comes in capsule form that’s too large for her to swallow, you might need to break it into smaller parts or use a compounded liquid version if available.
Always monitor how she responds and report any adverse effects like vomiting or loss of appetite back to your vet right away!

Hi PetLover123,
I had a similar experience with my dog. I got the doxycycline from a vet-recommended pharmacy and administered it twice daily. My vet also suggested giving her yogurt to aid in digestion because she was prone to digestive issues.
Also, make sure you store the medication as directed on the packaging. Typically, it needs to be kept away from direct sunlight and at room temperature.
If your dog has difficulty swallowing pills or capsules, you can ask your vet about crushing them into a fine powder and mixing with a bit of wet food. Just ensure that none of the medicine is wasted this way!

Thanks so much, VetFanatic and HappyPetOwner! I really appreciate your advice. Giving her yogurt sounds like a good idea; she loves it.
I'll be sure to follow the vet’s instructions closely and monitor how my dog reacts to the medication. I’ll also keep an eye on any signs of discomfort or adverse effects.
Thanks again for all the tips!
